Mention ancient Egypt and people think of the pyramids, the best known of all the monuments in Egypt. They were monumental burial places for the Egyptian pharaohs between 2630 and 1640 BCE (pyramid building started in the Third Dynasty). Tombs and other funerary buildings survived until today because they were built in the desert and stayed there undisturbed as opposed to the palaces, homes and other everyday buildings that were built in the fertile Nile Valley where people are still living today.
