Iziko and the Department of Antiquities at Stellenbosch
Iziko Museums of South Africa has had a long-standing relationship with the Department of Ancient Studies at Stellenbosch University.
From 2005 to 2007 Iziko and the Department of Ancient Studies displayed a number of antique objects (including Egyptian artefacts) at the Sasol Art Museum, a museum which forms part of the university.
This exhibition was called Living Antiquity, which was later re-themed and re-named Containing Antiquity. Many of the objects that were displayed at this exhibition were previously held in storage within the vaults of the Iziko Museum’s collection. Displaying the objects had many benefits for the public and the students. Read the story here>
Viewing original objects has many advantages over merely seeing an image/reading about it online. The scale and technique of the object can be appreciated, which can be difficult to observe from even the best images in books.
Dr Ruhan Slabbert and Ms Liani Swanepoel of the South African Animal Mummy Project at the Department of Ancient Studies attended the 8th World Congress on Mummy Studies held 6-9 August 2013 at Museu Nacional, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The congress brought together the world of natural and deliberate mummies – ancient Egyptian, Inca, bog bodies, etc. – and focused on the scientific study of everything related to mummies and mummification.
